This is an important period, and we should be aware of the
effects associated with this astrological influence. Since it is
so often, we must learn what it means and how to take advantage of
it.Astronomical backgroundThere is no real backwards movement of Mercury; it's just that we see it this way from Earth, because of the combined movement of the Earth and Mercury around the Sun. However, astrologically this is very relevant. General influence of Mercury retrogradeMercury rules over the mind's processes, studying, communication, businesses, travels and the like. When Mercury reverses its direction, all these areas are affected as well. The mind turns naturally inwards and people tend to analyze more the own thoughts and follow the common thinking patterns, rather then be curious and eager of new intellectual experiences or challenges. This helps the meditation or the thorough lonely long-term study of a specific matter, but it affects the study of new subjects, the communication with the others, the attention oriented outwards. Businesses, travels and communications tend to experience delays and different problems. Computers and other processes that work with information may experience crashes, unexpected failures. Don't enroll to courses, don't buy expensive Mercurian items (books, cars, mobile phones etc.), don't sign important contracts and do not marry. What is this Mercury retrograde period good for?It is definitely a very good period for some actions. No time is completely bad for anything, there is a reason in everything happens. The key is the reversed direction of movement: take any known Mercurian action, reverse its flow, consider the keywords "re-doing something", "double-checking", "finish the old projects" and there you are, you've found the good side of Mercury retrograde. For instance, you may want to read again a book you particularly liked, a subject you studied before, meet and discuss with old friends you haven't met for a long time, travel to places you've already been to before. This is an excellent time to work on old projects that never got to be finished. So, think about the things you started and never finalized. Next, you might wish to prevent any bad things to happen to you: so double-check your agenda, call your business partners to confirm that everything goes as planned, have everything ready before the deadline and leave some extra time for unexpected events. Make copies of your important files and documents, save your work more often. The other solution is to go on vacation or at least slow down
the pace of your projects. You will find that going slowly during
the Mercury retrograde period will spare you many efforts of
redoing the same action that wasn't performed right the first
time. Above all, be generous and compassionate: you are already aware
about the influence of this period, but the others aren't aware of
it or there may be uncontrollable events. That's why you should
have more diligence with the others and give them some more time.

When you have Mercury retrograde and
getting the eclipses, negative transits are the triggers which can be
ignited very easily. It would be great to be able to change the stars and
planets in your chart and predict a
better outcome, but remember that you've seen the potential of the future,
and if don't take action which can make the things come about, you can
avert the prediction and in the end, have this relationship the way you
want it.
It's not able manipulation of the stars, because they are bigger than us ;), but it's about seeing the whole picture of what may come about and figuring a good strategy to help avoid the potential pitfalls which are predicted with astrology, which is not carved in stone. Any astrologer or psychic who predicts without a doubt about the future, is not using his or her talents, because our free will is more powerful than you think. I've given predictions, as my father has (he was very intuitive), and the people with whom I've tried to warn about things just ignored the message, and it happened anyway. It is suggested to you to not take any or all aggressive action or communications about issues in a relationship, because there is a tendency for it to add fuel to the fire...the potential fire...of your relationship not culminating into a commitment. Mercury retrograde is the time when people from the past come into your life, but do so in a temporary way. It's a time when you can review your life and it will assist you for the future, because you can do mental housecleaning. I've been removing a lot of paperwork from business connections and clients as far back as 1997, so I can concentrate on the present and the future once Mercury goes direct at the end of the month. It's also a good time to revise papers, make corrections and double check for typos or documents which may have been sent in error or are incomplete. Usually, appointments are cancelled, changed, or items you are waiting for via mail, now email as well, come to you late. My printer's gone on the blink, the bank has made several errors in my account, and we're waiting for some important documents which are late. I was aware that these things may occur, so all I can do is hang on to the rope through the stormy sea so I don't fall off the boat and when Mercury goes direct, I can once again operate through the more calm sea. Rocking the boat during this time or creating situations which may have repercussions for you in the future just doesn't make sense. The science of astrology is the casting, creating or calculating the planets in our universe and the art of it is interpreting what is there with the motive that you are trying to obtain the best outcome of the situation at hand. It's not fortune-telling, but it gives the forecast in an objective way so that you can take time to view what may be ahead and then plan your actions which will help you with the most positive result, based on your wants, needs, desires, and wishes. |
If you own a computer, beware. Also, don't even think about buying a computer or major item during this period. You may end up having to either reorder, send it back, or find out that it wasn't what you had in mind. It's a time to review, clean out your paperwork, closet, or anything which needs to be redone, such as redoing the bedroom, attic, etc. Just pay attention to anything you sign during this period. What is astrologically deemed to be a Mercury retrograde event is that what you begin during this time might end up coming back to haunt you or even be finished during this time. You also may get a telephone call, email, letter or visit from someone from your past. This may be an opportune time to contact someone from your past with whom you have to finish something up with or with whom you feel you need to retry something with him or her. Get the idea?
A romantic relationship which is formed during this time may have false starts. If you receive a marriage proposal during this time, what comes to my mind is "What was he or she thinking?" Just be very careful of how you reply. It would be a good idea to wait until the retrograde period is over before you give your answer.

Mercury Retrograde on Election Day 2000
It's now 10:10 AM, on the 8th of November, 2000. Florida is in a state of confusion. What has occurred in the last 12 hours, when the planet of the mind, Mercury, makes a stationary position in our heavens? Mercury represents all forms of communications, including voting ballots, since it is a form of communicating. So are letters, legal papers.

Yesterday, the media posted that Gore won the votes in Florida. This was retracted and Florida was up for grabs. The media rushed to judgment. |

It was then announced early this morning that Bush had most of the votes. He was now declared the winner. |

Gore makes a telephone call to concede and congratulate Bush. Soon after this message, Gore recalled Bush to rescind and retract his concession congratulations, because there had been news that there were not only absent votes which weren't counted, but that some of the voting boxes had been misplaced. (I wonder if Gore should have put them in his "lock-box"). I wonder if Gore will have to re-concede when all is said and done. |

The state of Florida now has to recount the votes as well as wait for the absent votes to come in. |

Many voters in Palm Beach county felt that the ballot was misleading and poorly marked. Approximately 3400 people thought they were voting for Gore, and accidentally marked a vote for Pat Buchanan. What are the true returns? Do you think that there will be a recount for the residents of Palm Beach county? Although Mercury's movement moved forward yesterday, there can still be uncertainty, confusion, a mis-reading of documents and statements, and where Florida is concerned, this election process may not be totally over for another week or so. |

Gore is presently ahead in the popular votes, but as of this moment, still behind in Florida. We have to wait until Thursday, the 9th, for the final results to come in. And then, who knows if it will still be over? After all, many people will be rehashing this situation over and over again!
How will Palm Beach county's votes affect the final outcome? Are there enough votes to give Gore the 25 electoral votes, the win in Florida, and finally, the presidency?
In addition, officials in Missouri had gone to court to extend the hours of voting. This also was overturned, or retracted, by a higher court.
Mercury Retrograde
Mercury turns retrograde three times a year, as a rule, but the effects of each period differ, according to the sign in which it happens.
A planet is described as retrograde when it appears to be moving backwards through the zodiac. This traditional concept arises in the illusory planetary motion created by the orbital rotation of the earth, with relation to other planets in our solar system. Planets are never actually retrograde or stationary, they just seem that way, due to this illusion.
Retrograde periods, although often problematic for us earthlings, are not particularly uncommon. Each planet retrogrades, except the Sun and Moon.

Fated Events
As a rule, retrograde planets presage a period of seemingly inevitable or fated events, which relate to their sphere of influence. They present us with a series of events over which we seem to have little or no control, relating especially to the sign in which the retrogradation occurs. For example, Mercury retrograde in Scorpio presents quite different sets of circumstances from those generated when it retrogrades into Libra.
A retrograde period is best seen as a cycle, beginning when the planet begins to slow to a halt before travelling backwards through the zodiac and ending when the planet returns to the point where it first paused. However, during the cycle, the planet's energy is most powerful (and more likely to generate critical events of universal importance) when the planet makes a station, appearing motionless in the sky. These stationary periods occur at the beginning of the cycle (when the planet first halts as it prepares to move backwards) and midway through the cycle when the retrograde planet slows to a stop before moving forward again.
What does Mercury affect?
In general, Mercury rules thinking and perception, processing and disseminating information and all means of communication, commerce and transportation. By extension, Mercury rules people who work in these areas, especially people who work with their minds or their wits: writers and orators, commentators and critics, gossips and spin doctors, tricksters and thieves.
Mercury retrograde gives rise to personal misunderstandings; flawed, disrupted, or delayed communications, negotiations and trade; glitches and breakdowns with phones, computers, cars, buses, and trains. And all of these problems usually arise because some crucial piece of information, or component, has gone astray, or awry.
When Mercury is retrograde, everyone's thinking is more introspective and we tend to think about issues and concerns which relate to the sign involved.
